"I got this book because it's written by Susan Wilson. She's a wonderful writer who always does her canine characters justice. Then I freaked out, a chapter in ... when I realized the family dog was going to be sent to war. While I'm all for dogs-with-jobs (because they're so good at what they do), even potentially depressing or dangerous work such as bomb sniffing dogs or K-9 Corp (police), I'm NOT comfortable with dogs being turned into soldiers. There's no better job for a smart dog AFTER a war than one trained to be a companion to a vet with PTSD or a physical disability. But, historically, dogs IN (former) wars often never made it back home, even if they survived their jobs, even as heroes. As Ms. Wilson's story takes place in the 1940's, I was concerned I would be asked to be okay about something I'm opposed to. The author and her story managed to lead me right around that issue though, giving me such an interesting and sincere trio of characters with integrity - four if you count the dog Pax, and I do -- that I was able to thoroughly enjoy this story. Were dogs treated as well as Pax was during that time in history? In the home OR on the battlefield? Probably not, but the love these people had for this dog was believable. And that's all a novel really has to be. Idealizing events into the way they should be or should have been - while maintaining the realism this author is so skilled at ... simply made this another newly favorite book of mine."
