"While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call. The elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum, a baffling cipher found near the body. As Langdon and a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, sort through the bizarre riddles, they are stunned to discover a trail of clues hidden in the works of DaVinci--clues visible for all to see and yet ingeniously disguised by the painter." Contains spoilers.
Fantastic, could not put it down! This is a very good thriller with a very unusual topic. The author seems to have done his research well. I could not resist the temptation half-way through the book to download The Last Supper and The Mona Lisa, just to see if the statments made in the book have a solid backing. Amazing :-) The only thing I didn't like that much were the references to Disney. Even if there are references to be found in the Disney films, Disney did not invent those stories, they were written down by people like Hans Christian Anderson and The Brothers Grimm before he came along. I thought that was a bit far fetched. Apart from that - I loved the book :-)
Thanks for sharing.

After thinking a bit more about this book, I still like it, but I don't think this will be one of the books I recommend to all my friends. It is a great page-turning artistic-historical-religious thriller, but I think the author could have put a bit more research into his work. Some of the things he comes up with are a bit too far fetched and kept me thinking, that you could interpret everything in his point of view, but just as well from the church's point of view, even utterly unrelated things.

All the action takes place on one night which is pretty amazing because there is so much of it. What drives the novel along is the pacey plot with lots of cliff-hangers to keep you hooked, together with the blend of artistic, religious and historical information, cleverly synthesised to create the clues followed by the characters on their quest.

Release planned for Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at 2nd class in Controlled Release, Controlled Release Controlled Releases.

Going to Auglaise in Cardiff :-)

I really couldn't put this one down. I really enjoyed both how the characters and the plot developed through out the novel, and I think that Brown created a very believeable conspiracy. I don't really have any problem believing that the Catholic Church is hiding things that they don't want people to know (I was raised Catholic, and the film Stigmata came at a rather influential time for me), and actually think it would be great if Jesus was portrayed more as a man and not a deity. My extrememly evangelical manager saw me reading the book at work, and I was then treated to a 20 minute lecture about how Satan influences the public, and instead I should read the Bible. It may have gone better for him if I hadn't started giggling....

Anyway, I enjoyed it and would like to read more by this author. Thanks for starting the ring tuff517!

I received this book in the mail today. I am also reading The Purpose Driven Life, so this should be an interesting combination!

Journal Entry 11 by PaigeTurner124 on Friday, August 20, 2004
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was also a quick read. Instead of having long, drawn out chapters, he has short brief chapters – some as short as a paragraph. Just about every chapter ends with a teaser and/or cliffhanger. This makes it hard to put down, and knowing the chapters are short, you keep thinking, “just one more”. Before you realize it, you’ve read four or five more chapters.

I enjoyed this book for several reasons. First, I simply enjoyed the story line. It was smooth and flowed seamlessly. I also enjoyed the puzzles, codes, and the mystery of the story. Dan Brown fills the book with interesting facts and history lessons, which I also found educational and/or entertaining. The question is how much is actually true? While reading this book, it is almost impossible not to stop and research the information given by the author. While doing so, it is evident there are many, many people who have spent a lot of time doing this and there are several websites dedicated to proving and disproving various points in Brown’s book. This book definitely gives you some food for thought.

In the end, I think it is important to remember that this is a work of fiction. Yes, it peppered with facts, but these facts are embellished and expanded upon in an effort to write a novel.

I'm sending off to Geniedances today.

This is one of the best novels I have ever read. Couldn't put it down. Managed to read it in two days. I met people who had read it or were curious about it as I was reading it over lunch, in the gym (stationary bike) and on the bus. No one had a negative reaction. All of us agreed it brings up interesting ideas and a realm of possibilities. Found myself looking up a number of places and information sources discussed in the book. Excellent read! Mailed it to the next BCer on this list today.

Journal Entry 16 by nicole4 from Chicago, Illinois USA on Friday, October 29, 2004
Excellent book! I've found a lot of times when I read a book that has gotten alot of pub, I'm disappointed because I'm expecting too much...this was definitely not the case here! Loved this book! This was my first time reading Dan Brown and I can't wait to read more. I'm also interested in getting one of the books that decodes the DaVinci Code because I'd like to see how much was fact and how much was fiction. Great gook!

Mailed to Snoow 10/28/04

Journal Entry 17 by Snoow from Lyon, Rhône-Alpes France on Saturday, November 6, 2004
Received this week, but I had to wait til this morning to pick it up at the post office.

All your journal entries are so enthusastic ! I just can't keep waiting for reading it !

Journal Entry 18 by Snoow from Lyon, Rhône-Alpes France on Wednesday, November 24, 2004
Just thrilling ! The story kept me breathless for 454 pages !

Anyway, like some of you, I wish the author had inserted more clues to help us distinguish the truth from the fiction.
Plus, I spotted one mistake in Paris' geography*, an at least 3 or 4 mistakes in french (you can trust me on that point) so I don't know if we can trust this book from a historical point of view, or from a religious point of view...

I will soon send it to the next reader.

* From the "Gare de Montparnasse", it is impossible to take a train to Lyon : this station serves western France...

Journal Entry 20 by SudoKris from Lathones, Scotland United Kingdom on Thursday, December 16, 2004
OK - managed to finally read the DaVinci Code last night! It was a quick read, only took me four hours, and that was including trying to solve the clues by myself (successfully for most of them - especially the ones referring to the 2nd tomb were rather obvious... and so was the first one, actually (clue, not tomb)... and who did it... I mean, who else was left? X (name blocked out as not to spoil anyone's fun) was the only character excentric enough to attempt such a conspiracy!). Still fun, though! Some of it was - I thought - I bit far-fetched, and I found the very end rather pathetic, but still - a good mystery/thriller-thing as far as those go! Oh, and I went to Paris in the summer and spent ages in the Louvre (not the Denon wing in particular, though, more the medieval stuff and the dutch Renaissance painters around Vermeer... and the statues - too many tourists in the Denon wing!)

Finished this over Spring Break and was impressed how quick and easy it was to read. Definately an interesting topic that makes you think a little more deeply about religion! I am glad I read it because now I am picking up on all the pop culture references to it on TV and in other books!

dan brown just annoys the hell out of me.
i kind of liked the angels and demons book but after reading 5o pages of the da vinci code i had to give up. it feels like the same old story just in another city, with other people and another secret society.
sorry mr. brown but you just didn't do it for me.
the book will travel on to shelly-sparkle, i hope she'll enjoy it more than i did.

Journal Entry 30 by Shelly-Sparkles from Toogoolawah, Queensland Australia on Wednesday, August 17, 2005
Just got this book in the post today - and my what a funky package it came in - Thank you Anna.....

Well I started this read and was about 2 chapters in, when my aunt came down to stay from kenney, which is about 2 hours from where I live.

Anyhow she forgot to bring herself a beloved book, so she picked up this one and started to read it. And loved it and asked could she borrow it.

I know it was a little naughty but the book ring went off course for 2 weeks while my aunt devoured this story.

I got it back in the post last week and was not so bitten.

I struggled to find any real interest in the book, but completed it (well not the last chapter) last night.

I have Angels and Demons here that I feel I will give to my aunt as I am sure she will no doubt enjoy another story by the same author. I am sure that I will not. lol

Time for me now to Pm Tuff517 to see where to book travels to next.

Happy Reading....

Finished over the weekend. I enjoyed the book but not as much as Angels and Demons and Digital Fortress as I found I could actually put this down... A friend has loaned me a copy of this containing pictures so I can verify the references made by the author, so that will keep the story alive for me for a bit longer..

Thanks for including me in the ring tuff517 :o)
