10 out of 10

What a great book. Don't let the title mislead you-- the word "hacker" is used in its older sense of computer enthusiast, rather than the modern sense of computer burglar.

This book starts in 1959 and ends in 1983, and I got my first computer in 1984, so it's fascinating to see how the art of hacking grew and changed before then: moving, evolving, flourishing, branching and dimming out like the game of LIFE that so fascinated the hacker Gosper.

The book ends with what is supposed to be a sad note, the last hacker leaving MIT for good: Richard Stallman with plans to write the GNU operating system. This action led to what the author might have called the fourth generation of hackers, the Free/Open Source Software hackers. The Hacker Ethic is alive and well.

I'm going to offer this book to all of my hacker friends.

I visited the Computer History Museum this weekend with a friend who (though initially doubtful) became enthusiastic over the exhibits. I think he'll like this book.
