When Elise Morceau meets the writer Constance Holden, she quickly falls under her spell. Connie is sophisticated, bold and alluring – everything Elise feels she is not. She follows Connie to LA, but in this city of strange dreams and razzle-dazzle, Elise feels even more out of her depth and makes an impulsive decision that will change her life forever.

Three decades later, Rose Simmons is trying to uncover the story of her mother, who disappeared when she was a baby. Having learned that the last person to see her was a now reclusive novelist, Rose finds herself at the door of Constance Holden’s house in search of a confession . . .

I had high expectations for this novel as I really liked her previous ones, particularly The Miniaturist and whilst she tackles some quite big issues in this most recent one, I feel the characters felt a bit flat.
I was intrigued by Connie but Elise didn't grab me at all. I did feel for her in a way but not enough to care what really had happened to her. Rose was probably the only character I could somehow relate to as she was nearest in age to me.
Don't get me wrong, the novel is beautifully written and I stayed up late to finish it but it didn't have the overall "wow" factor

I found it hard to put this book down. Interesting weaving of Elsie & Connie’s back stories with Rose & Connie’s present. But in the end I felt a bit cheated, as I didn’t feel we had extracted quite all of this books secrets. And perhaps I didn’t agree with all of the characters choices. Which I know is normal for real life. But then that’s why I read, to escape from that and find stories with everything neatly tied up I suppose. Still glad I read it.

I enjoyed this book with its intertwined stories.

I haven’t read any other books by this author so interested to see what they’re like if they’re better!

AVL until I find a new reader.
