I got this at the San Antonio Central Library Book Cellar. I like mysteries and it's a thin book I can read quickly and not get attached to so I can release. Journal entry once I read it.

8 out of 10

I'd MEANT to finish this one quickly, but it didn't happen. Geocaching got in the way and I lost 3 days of reading time. :)

However, I enjoyed this book. Once upon a time I was hugely into Agatha Christie and this book reminded me of her books. However, I'm not saying that Peters is writing in the same formulaic manner as Christie did. She might, but I'm just starting the second book I have of her's, so we'll see. I think it's more that both authors are older English women, so there's a certain tone or style of writing that's similar.

As with Christie's books, this one is a mystery novel. But rather than being written in a whodunit style, this book goes more into the everyday events that are happening as clues are found about a murder. As one reviewer, Publishers Weekly, wrote: "This is a deeply satisfying murder novel in which the central challenge lies in unraveling the mystery of a young woman's character."

I have to say that the murderer turned out to be the person I thought it would be about halfway through the book. However, I think the story was good because even after I began to suspect "whodunit," Peters didn't make it the central preoccupation of the story. In addition, all sorts of clues were thrown in which made me doubt almost to the very end my initial suspicion. I like that about murder mysteries. :) And now for the summary from the back of the book:

"

'There is a kind of beauty that produces wolf whistles, and another kind of beauty that creates silence all about it, taking the voices out of men's mouths and the breath out of their throats.'
Annet Beck's beauty is of the second order and it worries her parents so much that they guard her as closely as a prisoner...until the rainy Thursday in October when she disappears.

Annet is last seen vanishing over the crest of Hallowmount, a hill in the remote Welsh Country believed to be the domain of witches. Five days later she mysteriously reappears, claiming that she was gone for only two hours.

Detective Inspector George Felse doesn't believe in witchcraft, but he does believe in love and he never underestimates its power, especially when it may have led to murder..."
