I found this book fascinating, but scary in my Utopian lit. class. I think a lot of the ideas from this book were used in "The Matrix" movies. Although it may seem outdated by the title, the ideas can still be applied to politics and government today.

I got this at a library sale, and was labeled by its previous owner, Randy Zanassi.

Newspeak, doublethink, thoughtcrime--in 1984, George Orwell created a whole vocabulary of words concerning totalitarian control that have since passed into our common vocabulary. More importantly, he has portrayed a chillingly credible dystopia. In our deeply anxious world, the seeds of unthinking conformity are everywhere in evidence; and Big Brother is always looking for his chance. Amazon.com

finally picked up this book i've had on my shelf for ages. as one of the earlier dystopia-type books orwell certainly gets a lot of credit for his depicition of the harshness of communist/totalitarian societies. the book doesn't really succeed as a novel in that there's not much action or characterization; it's really more one of those books that's really an essay with the faint trappings of a novel. so not really the kind of book i'm that interested in, but i can see how people with an interest in political philosophy would enjoy it.
