Journal Entry 1 by ResQgeek from Alexandria, Virginia USA on Monday, January 27, 2020
A good friend of mine works on the team that makes the TV series "Bosch" based on these Michael Connelly novels, and watching the show has made me a fan. So any time I see a Harry Bosch novel I haven't read, I grab it to read. This one was in a local Little Free Library. I'll read it soon and then release it.

Bosch is working New Year's and has worked two suicide scenes when he gets a call to check out a bone found by a dog in Laurel Canyon. That bone turns out to be from the remains of a young boy, buried in the hills above the canyon, and show that this child was extensively abused before he was finally killed. Bosch and his partner, Jerry Edgar, are determined to find the killer, even though this is an old murder and there don't seem to be many leads. When the initial investigation into the boy's family can't conclusively link his murder to the abuse he suffered, Bosch and Edgar must re-think their entire case.

The primary plot of the first season of the the "Bosch" TV show is based on this book, so reading this book was a slightly weird experience, full of deja vu moments. But there are a lot more details here, and because the story is told from Bosch's point of view, we also get inside his head, learning more about his reactions to the events as they unfurl.

One of the differences between this book and the show is that it ends with Bosch retiring from the LAPD. This (I think) is his *first* retirement, and because I'm reading these books out of order, I know that he doesn't stay retired. His career takes some interesting turns, and I'm looking forward to reading more of the books in the series to fill in the gaps in his story.
