Journal Entry 1 by Ebumu from Ithaca, New York USA on Monday, April 19, 2004
This is the book that I saved for the weekend. I was disappointed by it. There's a big dose of Wuthering Heights in it: obsessive love and destruction. The characters plunge into the depths of self-abuse. I have seen just enough of that in people I love that I do not to want to go there unless there's some new insight to be had. Didn't find any here. Classic battered wife syndrome; extreme but classic batterer. The book is dark, and deals with themes of infidelity, abuse, isolation. It also includes contrasting threads of growth, forgiveness, and hope. And boy, Alice Hoffman can write. Let's see what you think.
