From the back cover:
The two novels in this volume are variations on the same themes: Colette's childhood, her family, and - above all - her mother. Vividly alive, fond of cities, of music, theater, and books, Sido devoted herself to one village, Saint-Sauveur, and to one love, her garden with its inhabitants, the children and the animals. In her preface to this edition, Colette wrote: "The personage of my mother...haunts me still. The reasons for this prevailing presence are not far to seek: any writer whose existence is long drawn out turns in the end towards his past, either to revile it or rejoice in it.
