I *adore* this book and so was delighted to find it second-hand because there wasn't a snowflake's chance in Hades that I was going to part with my original copy. I'd like to make this an international bookray. Please PM me with location and shipping preferences if interested.

From the back of the book;

"A few spliffs, a spot of mild S & M, phone through the copy for tomorrow's front page, catch up with the latest from your mystery source - could be big, could be very big - in fact, just a regular day at the office for free-wheeling, substance-abusing Cameron Colley, a fully-paid-up Gonzo hack on an Edinburgh newspaper.

The source is pretty thin, but Cameron senses a scoop and checks out a series of bizarre deaths from a few years ago - only to find that the police are chacking out a series of bizarre deaths that are happening right now. And Carmeron just might know more about it than he'd care to admit...

Involvement; connection; liability - Complicity is a stunning exploration of the ,orality of greed, corruption and violence, venturing fearlessly into the darker recesses of human purpose."

The New York Times Book Review From the brilliant opening...that lands the reader smack in the middle of the first of a series of cold-blooded murders to the final confrontation on a weather-beaten wild island...Complicity is irresistibly compelling.

The Daily Mail's comment on this one is bang on the mark:

'Brutal in the nightmarishness of its gruesome murders and sexual explicitness but never less than a no-holdsbarred blitz of a thriller.'

I'm a wimp and couldn't finish it so I'm sending it to someone who, I hope, will appreciate it as it deserves.

What a story! I actually cringed at parts. I will admit, it left me feeling somewhat "empty" when I had finished. Iain Banks sure told quite the story. I'll be thinking about this one for some time! Releasing to goatgrrl.

I received Complicity in yesterday's mail - sorry it's taken me a day to get around to journaling it. Thanks very much, Mytilusgirl and Rrrcaron, for sending it along. I anticipate getting started on this book in the next couple days, just as soon as I finish Shylock's copy of An Instant in the Wind

I've heard so much about Iain Banks, I think I was expecting something even more edgy than Complicity turned out to be. That said, I really enjoyed this book. Colley Cameron is a great protagonist -- bright, neurotic, complicated and utterly believable. I loved his addiction to computer games, and his dismay at the wreckage of his "Despot" universe near the end of the book (I'll be careful here not to give too much away - suffice to say something happens to his computer!).

Cameron's drug use (in particular, the narcotic roller coaster he rides -- a little bit of speed, then a joint to mellow out, then a little more speed to wake up, and on and on) invites the obvious comparison to "St. Hunter", to whom he refers several times in the book (Hunter S. Thompson, author of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas), but since it's been a while since I even thought about Thompson, this part of the story was original and funny for me. I also enjoyed Banks' descriptions of Edinburgh, a city with which I'm only familiar through Ian Rankin's Rebus series (I liked recognizing some of the places in Edinburgh -- Mary King's Close, Salisbury Crags, the Cowgate -- from having read about them in the Rebus novels). I guess I've been exposed to too much American television (God help me), 'cause the violence in this book didn't seem over the top to me, and certainly wouldn't deter me from recommending it to others. All in all, a quick, fun read -- I'll definitely be on the lookout for more of Banks' novels.

Thanks, Mytilusgirl! This will go in the mail to newk today (August 5, 04). Hopefully it won't take too long to make the journey from Canada to Australia.

This book travelled to Melbourne with me. I watched Port Power beat Collingwood in a game of Australian football. I had a great game of golf at a rather nice course (and lost a few dollars unfortunately). Had a few drinks and a splendid meal.
And I finished the book!
A dense and serious read. As well as a good mystery well written it throws up a few questions to ponder about the nature of society and justice.
I have read better Banks (mostly the science fiction where he writes as Iain M Banks I think) but I did enjoy it.
Thanks again to mytilusgirl. And cross fingers that book travels well to UK when I get address of the next in line

Thanks, I've received the book today. Will try to read and journal it very soon, because end of next week I'm away for 3 week, so Iain Banks will be my tbr right now. Thanks for the postcard and bookmark. Will take it and replace it with something from around here to pass further on.
I will contact alans-daughter asap, hopefully she will be able to give me her addy before I'm away, else the book will be stalled with me for the next 3 weeks until I'm back...

I tried, but I couldn't get into the book. I got at times confused by the story told in the second person, then switched to the first person...plus I have a couple of Dean Koontz books which just flirt with me to read them (he is one my fav. right now), so I am passing this book onto alans-daughter, who hopefully will enjoy it more than I did.
Since I'm sending it only 2 days after I've received it and alans-daughter is living in Europe as well, I am sending it via ground shipping, I'm sure it will arrive soon nevertheless.

Arrived today a little worse for wear as the envelope was open all down one side! I've put it at the bottom of the pile to straighten it out a bit but I will read it next and send it on its way.

I have found that anything by Iain Banks (and IMB) is well worth reading, and this book was no exception. The depiction of Cameron Colley is just enough over the top to be amusing while still retaining believability in, and sympathy with, his character. I too enjoyed the Scottish setting now familiar from Rebus - must get up there and see it all for myself some day. A book that will make a lasting impression on the memory, I think. Due to the fact that my modem went kaput and I was offline for a while I got jogged to the end of this ring and Mytilusgirl has kindly said not to return it. So Complicity is now being passed to my Dad to read, and after that it will get a wild release. Many thanks Mytilusgirl.
