Cool Dead People: Obituaries of Real Folks We Wish We'd Met a Little Sooner

A humorous and inspiring collection that celebrates little-known people who led remarkable lives.

You won't find them in history books. They're people you've probably never heard of, but they made the world a more interesting place while they were in it. Here is just a sampling of the colorful obituaries you'll find in Cool Dead People:

• Insurance agent and Montana conservationist Art Aylesworth, best known as the "Bluebird Man" for his work with the mountain and western bluebirds, who built and gave away more than 35,000 bluebird nest boxes. His efforts saved these two birds from extinction.

• Mel Fisher, who spent years diving for sunken treasure, only to hit paydirt at the age of 62: Off Key West he uncovered a $400 million cache of silver bars, gold, emerald, diamonds, and pearls which had been lost on a Spanish ship in 1622.

• The literary agent, Connie Clausen, who began her career as an elephant rider in the circus.

From the doctor who healed a town to a typewriter repairman to the stars...from the countess who traded her title for a waitress tray, to the cleaning lady who left $150,000 to a local college, this whimsical and moving collection has the last word on over 100 people who could be, well, any one of us.

Funny little book. I've only read about 1/2 so far. Unfortunately I forgot to journal when I received it probably two weeks ago. Then I was gone for vacation for a week! Please forgive me!
I will send on its way shortly.

Jane O'Boyle collected obituaries of over one hundred interesting people (categorized into trailblazers, curators, problem solvers, advocates, and dreamers) and put them in this small book so that we could all learn more about them. While some of the people in here may be known to many, most of them are people that I’d never heard of, doing things I’d never known about. As she put it, “they are everyday people like you and me who did extraordinary things. And that makes them cool.”

As a poker player, I was particularly happy to find the obituary of Stuey Ungar, one of the greatest poker players ever that died at the young age of forty-five. While an incredible card player, he was also a hopeless gambler and addict and even lost $1,000,000 on one football game once.

At a mere 143 pages with larger than average type and smaller than average pages, the book takes hardly any time at all to read, but it’s still pretty darn interesting.

Seems pretty good - a very light read. It's headed out to the next person in the Bookring.

Journal Entry 12 by tish2002 on Thursday, June 2, 2005
I got this today. I'll journal again after I read it.

Journal Entry 13 by tish2002 on Wednesday, June 8, 2005
This is a great little book. I'm glad I got to read it. The part about Andy the goose made me sad though. I think the coolest person was the guy who made an artificial leg for a horse allowing it to live another five years. Anybody who helps animals is pretty cool.
senorag asked to be skipped and tsmith51632 is inactive. I got an address from raquelsita and will be mailing soon.

Wow...I think this was the very first bookring I ever signed up for and I was beginning to think it was a lost cause! It looks like a short easy read...maybe I'll get it done at the beach tomorrow!

This was pretty interesting, though I admit I skimmed through it. This is being sent on to Rampallion.

This arrived today. Thanks so much for sharing it!

I was delighted to see that one of the people featured in this book is Katherine Fanning, who was my teacher at Boston University. It was quite a shock to turn the page and see the name of someone I knew!

Journal Entry 18 by rampallion from Evanston, Illinois USA on Saturday, July 16, 2005
Eclectic and entertaining. I especially liked reading about Art Aylesworth (the "Bluebird Man"), Felicia Gizycka Magruder (the countess who ran away and became a waitress), and Shirley Polykoff (the advertising exec who came up with "Does she or doesn't she? Only her hairdresser knows for sure").

This is packaged up and ready to go to duhwitt. I plan to mail it on Tuesday.

On to the next reader...

I got this book in the mail a few days ago and figured it was so short I coud just read it before I journaled it. Well, I wasn't as interested in reading about dead people as I thought. Some of the stories are really cool, but after reading half a dozen it started to become somewhat of a chore. The title is still awsome though, and who could pass up a book with such a great title?

I will mail it off in the next week when I have an address.

My apologies to everyone on this bookray. I kept the book much longer than I should have. I mailed it first class to InAPerfectBind this past Tuesday.

I read it awhile ago and forgot to journal it. I did enjoy reading the obituaries. They were mostly entertaining. I couldn't figure out why Hitler's secretary was in a book entitled "cool" dead people but other than that most people fit the title aptly. Thanks for sharing it EllyMae58 and sorry for the big delay.
