Compared to Winton's 'Cloudstreet' and 'That Eye the Sky' this book just doesn't stand up. It seems topheavy and overlong. Winton's writing style is still that familiar West Aussie laconic, but seems slightly strained when describing Ireland and other parts of the world. Makes more sense when you know he had a grant to travel as long as he produced a book at the end of it.
