Book One of the Glass Trilogy.

Untrained. Untested. Unleashed.

With her unique magical abilities, Opal Cowan has always felt unsure of her place at Sitia's magic academy. But when the Stormdancer clan needs help, Opal's knowledge makes her the perfect choice - until the mission goes awry.

Pulling her powers in unfamiliar directions, Opal finds herself tapping into a new kind of magic as stunningly potent as it is frightening. Now Opal must deal with plotters out to destroy the Stormdancer clan, as well as a traitor in their midst.

With danger and deception rising around her, will Opal's untested abilities destroy her - or save them all?

First of all, I did not read the Study series that preceded the events from this trilogy and focused on other characters that do play a vital role in this trilogy. So I can not compare them.

I liked this trilogy. Opal may be a bit of a standard, insecure female main character at the start, but during the course of the trilogy she grows. Maria Snyder really does manage to let her characters become more in depth and not just Opal Cowan, who does seem prone to disaster from the start and gets a lot of hardship to endure. I loved the other characters and their development, among which Kade, Ulrick, Zitora, and even the villainous Sir. There is some love-triangle-trouble, which at first was kind of annoying to me, but in the end it did bring about a big surprise which I liked.

Opal's just not the standard heroine. She's flawed, at times extremely immature for a twenty-year old and very annoying in many ways, but I did like following her on her journey anyway. It took me right out of this world and into the magical world of Sitia that Maria Snyder created. So if you want to escape, and don't mind a little bit of immaturity and annoyance, this trilogy can be very enjoyable.
