This was absolutely, hands-down my favourite book when I was about ten years old -- circa 1974 (it must have come into my life around the time I finished all the Nancy Drews!). It seemed like such a contemporary book when I read it that I'm surprised to see it was actually written in 1964. I think the story of Harriet and her friends Janie, Sport and Beth Ellen will stand the test of time, so I had no hesitation picking this up at a garage sale today to release to another ten year old somewhere.Author Louise Fitzhugh wrote two sequels to Harriet the Spy: Sport and The Long Secret, also both excellent books. |
