This is British Columbia writer Audrey Thomas' 1984 book about the life of a slowly fracturing family living in BC's Gulf Islands during the 1970s. For anyone who lived on an island or coastal community in the Pacific Northwest during the '70s, amidst the hippie and back-to-the-land culture of that time, the tensions, politics and events described will be painfully familiar. The story is a little depressing, in the way that stories about people who are depressed can be, but I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended.

This book won the Ethel Wilson Prize for Fiction (a British Columbia Book Prize) in 1985.
