10 out of 10

A highly acclaimed 2000 novel by 30-something Native-Canadian author Eden Robinson. Monkey Beach is set in Kitamaat Village in northwestern British Columbia, and tells the story of a Haisla family suffering the recent and mysterious disappearance of their seventeen year old son and brother Jimmy (Jimmy's character was first introduced in Robinson's 1996 short story collection, Traplines). Through flashbacks on the part of Jimmy's sister, Lisa Marie (named after Elvis' daughter), we learn more about Jimmy's character, his relationship with Karaoke (the punked-out village beauty), and the influence of Jimmy and Lisa Marie's Uncle Mick (a fisherman and Native rights activist). Throughout, Jimmy's fate remains a central mystery. Monkey Beach is a story about childhood, family, loss, grief and life on a 21st century Native-Canadian reserve. While it deals with fairly harrowing themes, the most memorable elements of this novel are its warmth, humour and tenderness.

Monkey Beach was a finalist for the 2000 Giller Prize, and a nominee for the Governor General's Literary Award that year. Author Eden Robinson (left) had previously been awarded the Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize in 1997 for her first book, Traplines, is a member of the Haisla First Nation from northwestern British Columbia.

I'm mailing this book to Flashgirl in Minneapolis, Minnesota, since I love this book, found a spare copy this week, and it's on her wishlist. Best wishes from New Westminster, British Columbia (view of the Fraser River at left, taken from the top of my street).

Hooray! I received this in Minneapolis today, together with a cute Vancouver souvenir pin. Thanks, goatgrrl!

My company is sponsoring a reader's tour of Vancouver, and this is one of the books the group will be reading. My budget does not allow me to go on the trip, but at least I can read along and have a virtual visit!

First I need to read a few books I have promised to others, then I will gleefully dive into this one.

I enjoyed the characters and rich family stories in this book, as well as the deep sense of place and community. I can see why this is required reading for anyone traveling to British Columbia. I got a little impatient waiting for the plot to move forward, but was rewarded in the end.

Thank you so much for fulfilling my wish to read this book, goatgrrl!
