At Aye Write (Glasgow's Book Festival), Harriet Tyce said she had tried to write an unlikeable central character however I didn’t think she was thoroughly unlikeable, I mostly thought she was a stupid cow and spend a lot of the early part of the book telling her “don’t do it!” And I questioned things like, why did she move out so easily? She infuriated me but I was constantly shocked and surprised.
The protagonist, Alison has just been handed her first murder case, and she is hoping that it will take her career to the next level, but as she is caught up in trying to prove her new client’s innocence, her own family life begins to crumble. What threw a spanner in the works for me was the fact the murderer in her case was called Madeline Smith, also a Glaswegian woman that murdered her lover in the 19th century. So was this Madeline Smith a murderer too, or not? It ended with an incredible plot twist that I didn’t see coming.
I believe there is already an option for the film and TV rights.

Reading this book is like watching a car crash about to happen, in slow motion. Carl annoyed me from the start with his gaslighting and lack of self awareness (as a therapist). Lots of tension built up by the end. I enjoyed the details of the court cases and how they played out.

I really liked the writing style of Blood Orange - the book is definitely a page-turner - and I thought the Madeleine plot and the court case detail was interesting. Alison was a bit hit and miss for me: how could she see abuse so clearly in her work and not in her own relationships? Overall I liked the book and enjoyed reading it, but I felt it was let down by the ending, which was unnecessarily bizarre.

Certainly a page turner, this one.
I took an immediate dislike to Alison and Patrick and same as others I questioned why Alison was so blind and stupid not to see the similarities between her client's abusive marriage and her own affair with Patrick.
But a bit like Alison who couldn't say no to Patrick, I couldn't say no to turning page after page to find out where this was all going but eventually things click into place and the opening prologue makes sense in a gruesome way.
A gripping read for a debut novel !
