When Kinta Beeevor was five, her father, the painter Aubrey Waterfield, bought the sixteenth-century Fortezza della Brunella in the Tuscan village of Aulla. There her parents were part of a vibrant artistic community that included Aldous Huxley, Bernard Berenson, and D. H. Lawrence. Meanwhile, Kinta and her brother explored the glorious countryside, participated in the region's many seasonal rites and rituals, and came to know and love the charming, resilient Italian people. With the coming of World War II the family had to leave Aulla; years later, though, Kinta would return to witness the courage and skill of the Tuscan people as they rebuilt their lives. Lyrical and witty, A Tuscan Childhood is alive with the timeless splendour of Italy.

I just received this today! Not TOO bad - 20 days media mail transit time from Glendale, CA to Hawai`i. Can't wait to get started! Ciao.

May 15, 2004 - Just finished my vacation -spatial and temporal. This was set much earlier than I had expected, I don't know why. I enjoyed this tale of English expatriates. The writer makes her relatives and their servants all seem so quaint, and yet she really gives very little away about herself. She was lucky to have enjoyed such a bucolic childhood; I wonder if she simply edited out any bad stuff, or maybe bad stuff just really never happened to her. Actually that's not wholly accurate. She alludes to her distracted mother and a lonely period too. At any rate, most of it sounded wonderful.

May 17, 2004 - Mailed it off to Sofia, Bulgaria this morning.

I enjoyed this meditative, calm memoir about Toscana, childhood and Italian people.Indeed, the writer gives away very little about herself but on the other hand,it is obvious that she wanted to write exactly such a book about Italia and her best memories. She manages to give us a very vivid picture of Toscana`s people, food, holidays,as well as a brief but exact account of her family.Kinta Beevor keeps all through the book her calm and somewhat distanced way of narration even when she speaks about the war and the demolishing of the castle.Still, she gives enough of subtle and delicate psychological insight into her early childhood disappointments- such as her mother`s constant distraction from her children,or the small rows between her parents.
An easy and nice reading recommended for everyone who is already in love with Italy (like me:-)),or is interested in a good travel memoir.

PM-ed next person for the address and will pass the book ASAP.

I finished reading this book yesterday evening. It is an interesting memoir book. Kinta Beevor describes life in Tuscany and you almost feel you're there.
The other journalers for this book have described it very well, I don't really know what to add, except that I found it a very interesting and well written book. Thank you EMA375 for allowing nice calm evenings in company of Kinta and her friends and relatives.

It's leaving today to go across the Ocean to cestmoi.
Enjoy it!

I am not going to rate this because I didn't finish it. Kinta Beevor writes so descriptively about Tuscany..yet there seems to be no passion or soul in her memoirs. They don't come alive for me. Yes I can see Tuscany, she paints beautiful pictures with her words..but they don't warm me.

Off to the next participant as soon as I get the address.

Thanks for the opportunity to read this.

This arrived in today's mail, along with one other bookring. I have a few bookrings ahead of this, but will try to get everything read quickly and will mail on in a month, read or not. This got a little bent as my mail person decided to try and cram too much into my mailbox, so I've got the book under some heavy hardbacks to try and get it un-bent. I'm looking forward to reading this!

UPDATE 9/10 - I'm starting this today! This looks like a fairly quick read, so I hope to finish it in a day or two.

I just finished this early this morning and I have to say I agree with cestmoi. While the writing was very descriptive, I really had a hard time staying interested in it - it did pull me in as other similar books have done. I wasn't sure why that was until I read the other reviews here - the author really didn't give much of her feelings on her childhood and how it felt to go back.

My other minor annoyance with the book was that I felt like I should have an Italian dictionary with me. I probably just missed the definitions of some of the words - most of it you could understand based on context, but I still felt like I should flip back through what I'd already read to find out where the definition of an Italian word was. But again, that's probably just me reading too fast...

Anyway, I'll PM EMA375 to verify her address is the same as the sheet included with the book, then I'll mail this off sometime in the next few days. Thanks very much for the opportunity to read this!

UPDATE 9/27 - Sent media mail today.
