"Artemis Fowl is going straight- as soon as he pulls off the most brilliant criminal feat of his career... After being held prisoner for years, Artemis Fowl's father has finally come home. He is a new man- an honest man, much to Artemis's horror. He makes his son promise to give up his life of crime, and Artemis has to go along with it. But not until he has completed one last scheme. Artemis has constructed a supercomputer from stolen fairy technology. Called the "C Cube," it will render all existing human technology obsolete. He arranges a meeting with a powerful Chicago businessman, John Spiro, to broker a deal for the C Cube. But Spiro springs a trap- he steals the C Cube and mortally injures Butler. Artemis knows his only hope of saving his loyal bodyguard is to employ fairy magic; so once again he must contact his old rival, Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon fairy police. It is going to take a miracle to save Butler, and Artemis's luck may have just run out..." In this third book Artemis has become closer friends with the People (the fairies) and a comraderie has grown between him and the fair commander, Root, and Captain Short. They still distrust him and are aware that he's a danger to the secret of their existence; however, he was also their savior during the goblin revolt of book 2. Short and Fowl work well together and the witty dialogue and genius twists and turns in the action and Fowl's brain power are real page turners. But when it comes down to it the fairies feel he's too much of a liability and decide to selectively "mind wipe" him and his people of all their encounters with the People. However, how much of Artemis's mellowing and changes of heart are due to his interaction with them? Will he go back to being an evil boy genius after the wipes? More books would be fun to explore these questions and more about Artemis Fowl and company in more Fowl books. :)
