RELEASE NOTES:
On way to start the ring.
arrived in Newcastle this morning, one I've had one my wishlist for quite a while. Thanks daemonwolf
To be honest, I wasn't overly enamoured with this and I really struggled to keep reading it at some points. Whilst the writing is fantastic, I intensely disliked Humbert and this made it harder to continue the story.
Off to MarianFrench in a couple of days.

Book arrived safely - thank you
Firstly I am very sorry to have had this book so long - somehow it got out of order in Mt TBR. I am also very sorry to be struggling with the book and don't think that I am going to finish it. The language is fantastic and a real pleasure to read. What I am struggling with is the subject matter. Somehow, to be reading about Humbert's perversion seems to be condoning it (which is mad I know). Thank you daemonwolf for the opportunity to read this. It will be on its way to Loopy1 asap.
Marian
This book arrived safely in a rather cold Kent, and was waiting for me when I returned home from work at lunchtime.
This is a book that I've intended to read ever since the pop group The Police sang about it in the song Don't Stand So Close To Me - "Book marking, she's so close now, he starts to shake and cough, just like that old man in the book by Nabokov."
I'm also on a list for Reading Lolita In Tehran, so it makes sense to read this one first!
Thanks, I've just got one or two in front of it then I'll be reading this on.
Hi, just an update. I'm not posting any books out between now and January 5th for fear of losing them in the Yule deluge of post. I'd like to ask that this book is held back till the 5th as well. Happy holidays, all. :)
I really surprised myself in being able to finish this book! I started it, put it down after a few pages, started reading Reading Lolita in Tehran, got interested enough in their comments to pick the book up again, repeated the above a couple of times, and in the end finished it all.
It wasn't at all what I expected - I don't know if previous readers got put off by the beginning. Nabokov commented that some publishers made assumptions about the book and failed to read it properly. In fact, the book turned into a very realistic account of how an older man forces his attentions on a young girl who does her best to co-exist with him, seeing no alternative, but manages to still make a life for herself. My sympathies were very firmly with Lolita. As Humbert tried to persuade us that Lolita was willing the body language he described was obviously telling a far different story.
At the end Lolita triumphs, and makes a new life for herself. I needed to read that.
So although I didn't expect to, I'm now glad I finished reading this book. It will be travelling on soon. Thanks!
I assume from the previous journal entry that I'm being chased up to move this on - although I never received a copy of the journal entry, so didn't get that reminder.
In fact this book has rather a long story to tell - unfortunately I made a major mistake with it. I was in possession of both Lolita and Reading Lolita in Tehran, and managed to post the books off to the wrong people. I've received Reading Lolita back and am trying to contact the Australian bookcrosser who I sent Lolita to. If I don't manage to get a reply from her within the next few days I will obtain another copy of the book to continue the ring.
Again, apologies, but once again I had sent the book on, and only found the mistake out when KathyS contacted me to say she received the wrong book.
Arrived safely this morning :o) Thanks Loopy for getting it to me and Daemonwolf for sharing in the first place!
It has one ring book ahead of it, which is next TBR, so it might be a little while before I get to it - but I'll keep you informed, promise!
Well I did finish the book, which I know is more than some have managed, but I can't say that I enjoyed it as such. I found the language beautifully descriptive but the subject matter disturbing; although I did find it fascinating to witness Humbert's descent into total madness. Like Loopy I was glad to see that Lolita had managed to build a life for herself.
I'm pleased I read the book as I've often wondered about it, but I won't be repeating the experience.
Thanks for sharing this with us Daemonwolf and I hope to get the book on it's way to Apolonia in the USA as soon as possible.
UPDATE: 30th May 2005
Sorry, due to RL interferring and coursework deadlines, this book is still with me. I will be getting it in the post tomorrow - promise!

I seem to be one of the few people who has enjoyed this book. I was fascinated with Nabokov's descriptions and Humbert-Humbert's odd mental ramblings, strange personality disorders and his love of 'nymphets'. I am glad that there were no explicit scenes but was touched in some ways by his love for Lolita, even though it is considered wrong. He shows all the signs of a jealous, paranoid lover and is really diabolical at times...as for Lolita, how interesting it would be to see things from her perspective!
I really liked this book, thanks daemonwolf for sharing :)
Sending to Rakuna as next participant dropped out.

RELEASE NOTES:
Sent to next BCer on list
With the mail arrived Lolita. She has to wait for few weeks, but then I'm going to leave my school books and catch up with the fiction.
Lolita was as good book as I expected. Bit hard to read though. Sory it took me so long. I'll pass the book along as soon as I get Pookledo's address.
Received in the post this morning. A nice suprise!
I'm hugely behind schedule with bookrays, but I've jsut finished one book and am planning to start this book today. Sorry for the delay.
I have to admit that I've given up with this book. I was really looking forward to read it but the language in which it was written was just too inaccessible to me.
I tried for a dozen or so pages, but just wasn't enjoying it.
I'm hoping to pass this on to Angellica at the Nottingham BC meet on Saturday.
Received from Pookledo yesterday. Thanks for sharing.
This is one book that I was looking forward to reading to see what all the fuss was about. I felt daunted at the language at first and felt like I needed to carry a dictionary around whilst reading it.
I'm glad I perserved though. I enjoyed reading this very much. Even though it was written early in the twentieth century, it doesn't feel dated.
Have Pm'd meeko14 for her address and will be in the post asap.
Update June 5, 2006:
haven't heard anything from meeko14 so have pm'd MandaJo for her address
Update June 14, 2006:
still not heard anything, pm'd again. Posted ISO message on forums
Posting to MandaJo today. I hope you enjoy :)
Arrive in the mail today. Thanks for passing it along :) I'm almost done with the book I'm reading now, so I should be able to start it tonight and get it sent on its way.
I am trying desperately to be interested in this book, but I'm afraid I'm not having much success. I'll try for a few more pages, but if I don't make some headway in the next couple of days, I'll pass it along.
I almost tore my hair out reading this book. No kidding. It's like when you've got a friend that has just fallen in love and will NOT shut up about how great this person is for about 3 weeks straight. It was terrible. All of the wordplay and fancy english, and the whole time hearing the book narrated by James Mason in my head. But I finished it for the sake of saying that I read it and it was awful. I really hope that someone else likes this book as much as I couldn't stand it.
All set to pass this on to -psyche- when I get a response.

RELEASE NOTES:
The next person asked to be skipped, so it is going off to the last person on the list in Portugal... to be released or continued... Thanks for sharing this ring. I really enjoyed the language of this novel. I read it in high school; it's interesting to read it from this perspective.
