8 out of 10

You old sweetheart! A completely out-of-the-blue and completely lovely start to the day! And of course I'll pass it back once I've read it (well, my mum might have to have a quick read too, as she adores Sue Townsend and trekked to meet her and get my copy of 'The Cappucino Years' signed when she was doing a book-shop tour a couple of years ago - in the mum scheme of things that means they're practically sisters...)

Thank you so much, you little RABCK'ing scamp, you! :O)

Update June 04

Absoluetely fab, and a very quick read - my mum loved it too. :O)

Favourite bit (and, I feel, an omen for the future) follows (possibly not verbatim as I've sent the book back now!):

'Children say the most embarrassing things before we teach them to lie.
Yesterday my two-year old granddaughter happily handed the milkman the cheque I'd just written and said 'Here you are, bald man.'

That actually made me choke on my coffee - future echoes indeed! ;O)

Thanks so much again, Rach!

10 out of 10

How on earth could this NOT be a perfectly formed ten out of ten?!

Has to be one of my finds for the year - you see peeps, RABCK'ing is good for the soul ;-)

Favourite chapter? The last one - bloke on a train from London to Leicester talking to his mistress on his mobile, her hubs has 'discovered' her little fling...

"At one point he broke from speaking to his lover and phoned his wife. The line was engaged. Was his wife being inormed of her husband's deception? At Kettering, he said to his mobile: 'You know I love you, don't be a prat.' Infuriatingly it was impossible to tell whether he was speaking to his lover or his wife."

I spat my coffee clean across the room ;-) Never mind mobile phone bans coming in to force on trains and the like. I think as does Ms Townsend that they should be actively encouraged. You get to hear some FANTASTIC conversations lol

Bringing with me to Brum before I become too tempted to squirrel this away in my PC!

Kate napped this afty & instead of getting on with the pile of housework that needed doing, I sat out in the garden & finished this book :)

I'm a Sue Townsend fan from her Adrian Mole days & think I've read / have all of her books apart from Ghost Children & this one.

Apart from her smoking, I can empathise with lots of her character, especially her need to go shopping, spending days not talking to anyone (I talk to Kate, but that doesn't count *G*) & her Sensible Susan / Stupid Sue personas.

I'm not a big Adrian Mole fan, but I am a huge fan of lovely Sue Townsend and I love this kind of book. Looking forward to reading it very much.

Brilliant little observations. I've had this in my bag at work and have been reading it during coffee/lunch breaks.Perfect for this as it's easy to pick up and put down.
Too many favourites to single out but I did love 'Prince charles for King?'. It echoes many of my own sentiments. 'War on Slugs' also struck a chord.
Thanks for putting it in the bookbox tiggsybabes. I may take it along to the Ipswich meet-up next week.

A collection of her columns for Sainsburys magazine. Most are very amusing though are too short in my opinion. I'm a bit hit and miss with her work and although i enjoyed this I have no urge to keep it as some of the previous readers did.

I have never read the magazine, so Sue Townsend was new to me. I felt she spent most of her time complaining about how tiring it is too travel the world... so sad for her... ;( Then she spent the rest of her time promoting her play... not very impressive.
Some of her stories were lol! hilarious, but mostly it seemed to be a rant thread for her own therapy. We could all write one of those!
Sending to Flicki in Germany as a WishList RABCK! Enjoy!

6 out of 10

The book started out quite amusing, but unfortunately didn't stay that way... too many jokes repeated, to little new input. Still made it to the end, but I'm not a fan either. Sorry, though, for keeping the book for so long!
