Journal Entry 4 by choclaholic from San Antonio, Texas USA on Thursday, March 03, 2005
2005/14 This is the story of March, desperatley in love with Hollis since her father adopted him into her family when she was 11. The disturbed Hollis, a child of neglect and abuse, slowly found acceptance with March and only with March. But the young love was doomed for the usual teen reasons...a bit of selfishness, a dash of misunderstanding, and touch of immaturity and a whole lot of inexperience. Nineteen years go by and they have built seperate lives for themselves with other spouses and children. Now March comes back from California, with her rebellious teen daughter, she thinks just to attend a funeral. But Hollis has stayed all this time in this little Massacheusts town, and he is a guy regularly consumed by the passions of love and revenge. Thus their strange and unhealthy relationship is kindled again. I didn't really like this book very much, as I didn't think the characters were very well developed -- as to what motivated them to do what they did but, hey -- who said love was rational? Still, I never warmed to the characters, either and thought they made bad choices. And I tried so hard not to judge them by their crazy names (how about that boy named Coop?) but they actually did turn out to be the putzes I feared they would be. Some have likened this book to Wuthering Heights meets The Horse Whisperer. I think that's pretty apt as this book really was more a "romance" novel than I expected it to be. You never know with these Oprah Book Club books what your going to get. There are some Oprah books I've really loved (Stones from the River, Drowning Ruth, She's Come Undone, I Know This Much is True to name a few). Then there's ones like The Deep End of The Ocean and Vinegar Hill that I haven't warmed to. Still, I'll probably keep trying on the ones I haven't read yet, in the hopes of finding that hidden gem. Also, I've heard that this is a departure from Alice Hoffman's usual style, so I will still try some of her other novels, like Practical Magic that I still have here in my reading pile. Many readers have liked this, so dear finder, I hope perhaps that is you!
