I found this on the book exchange shelf in the lobby of the condo complex where we stayed in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, last week. I'm a fan of the Harry Bosch books, and this new character ties into Harry's world, so I grabbed it to read and then release.

Like Harry Bosch, Renée Ballard is an LAPD detective working out of the Hollywood station. And like Bosch, she finds herself there after having leaving RHD (Robbery-Homicide Division) under less than ideal circumstances. But where Bosch ends up working as a Homicide detective, Ballard is assigned to the "Late Show", the overnight shift, where she and her partner are the only detectives on duty and must handle any investigations that come their way.

So it is that she finds herself working a robbery, and assault, and a multiple homicide, all in a single shift. While her partner just wants to pass these cases on to the specialists on day shift, Ballard is determined to solve each of these crimes. And she does, but not without cost. Along the way, she accidentally spooks a suspect in a Federal investigation, gets deeply involved in a murder investigation that threatens to completely derail her career, and finds herself abducted by a seriously evil suspect.

There is a lot going on in this book, and it is a testament to Connelly's writing that it isn't at all confusing to read. Each of the story lines is clear and the reader is never left wondering who anyone is or how they connect to the overall story. And while Ballard is very much her own character, fans of Harry Bosch are going to find much about her to like.
