Journal Entry 3 by goatgrrl from New Westminster, British Columbia Canada on Wednesday, April 21, 2004
I started reading this book this morning, and have torn through just over half of it in one (long) day. I'm enjoying the book more than I did the movie, but the fact remains it's a pretty bleak tale. The Weight of Water is concerned with the subject of jealousy and its consequences. The apparently inevitable marital catastrophe in the modern half of the story is foreshadowed by what's happened -- the reader gathers -- in the historical half. I won't give away the ending, but I will say this: it ain't cheerful! Still, this book helped keep me distracted from the reality of my mate Len's heart valve replacement surgery, which is what was happening while I was reading it! For that reason only, I'll always be grateful for The Weight of Water. This book was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction in 1998. It's based on a true series of events on Smuttynose Island (New Hampshire) in the 1860s and 1870s. To view photos of the real Smuttynose Island, click here.
