Another enjoyable adventure stiry, this time about a conspiracy against the Emperor in Rome, with bits of the characters' parents' back story thrown in. The children seem to have such a good personal relationship with the Emperor that any pretence that they are typical or ordinary has rather fallen away.

Lawrence has also set herself a rather difficult task: presenting Mordecai as a competent and caring physician within the theoretical framework of the day. In all, she pulls it off rather well, albeit with some awkwardness.
