The funny thing was that I felt both apologetic and slightly peeved as if MS Lyall didn't quite "get" the British. Why should I feel I have to stand up for the British when many of the things she complains of are precisely the things I've been irked by?
Her descriptions of the delays that plague British life are bang on and her description of British weather is probably quite right, too, although in two extended trips there we were only attacked by the weather once. Admittedly, that was in Bristol where my husband was soaked to the skin while trying to find a coin laundry (beautiful or otherwise) and he was almost blown off the pavement in Edinburgh (but the wind always blows there) so nothing to complain of and the sun shone solidly while we were in York. She is very funny at times and at least amusing the rest of the time.
