The book is basically a biography of American Felix Sparks in the context of World War II and the times and places before and after the war. It reads like well-crafted fiction. This is a classic example of how a person goes not exactly from rags to riches but rather rags to success both morally and socially. It also shows how a man becomes the quintessential leader and is loved by the people he leads. It's also fascinating to see how he was hugely in favor of gun control and why. Especially given that he was an Outdoorsman and Hunter in his early life, relying on it for the most basic needs.
