One of my Mum's books, passed to me to read and bookcross.
This is an author that I can largely take or leave - some of her books I've really enjoyed, others I've given up reading. This was one of the former.
Nella is an ambitious, unsettled and somewhat pushy character - I do like her although I could personally never understand wanting to leave life on a farm to live in a city! The novel follows her life as she falls in love and loses it, deals with tragedy, success and surprises, and ends with her death. The pacing is a little off as the last half of her life is crammed into the last few chapters, decades whizzing by between one paragraph and the next, which somewhat spoilt it for me. You get so into following her life as a youngster, that it seems a bit of a cheat to jump around so much later one. Maybe the author got a bit bored with telling her tale!
