Journal Entry 1 by Fire-Dragon from San Francisco, California USA on Sunday, April 04, 2004
Newly arrived in New York, Ito is a literate yet tongue-tied chef who recites haiku in his head as he labours over restaurant shopping lists. Alone in his apartment at night, he reads pornographic comics, dreaming of Mariane, a lost, alcoholic waitress who works with him at a Chelsea sushi bar. Across town, Mariane lies in her bath with a drink in her hand, longing for the baby girl she abandoned almost fifteen years before. As Ito and Mariane attempt to make sense of their lives and their memories, they encounter immigrants from across the entire world, each of them bringing their very varied cuisines, histories and expectations to new lives in the New World. The quote on the back says it is "both profound and thrilling to read". My boyfriend says it was all right. Decide for yourself and then release.

Picked it up from the magazine rack in the Sushi Bar in Devonshire Street, Sydney while waiting for some takeaway lunch - salmon rolls and tempura don. Found the first page so interesting I ended up eating-in and reading. This is my first bookcrossing pickup, so thanks Fire-Dragon! I'll drop my current read in a coffeeshop nearby in a few days and begin reading this properly.
