5 out of 10

Apparently, Hesse was an early adopter of the Freudian psychological theories and this book is an example of those theories. If I knew more about Freud, it might have made more sense to me. As it was, this novel is somewhat of a romp, throwing in a depressed middle-aged man, phantasmagoria ad infinitum, and a heavy dose of political and sociological commentary.
