8 out of 10

I got this hardcover from the ongoing book-sale room at the Dunstable MA public library. Turns out it's a surprisingly-good overview of gladiators in ancient Rome, from how they became so (being captured in war, being enslaved, sometimes selling themselves to pay off debts, and occasionally just for the thrill) to how they're trained, the different styles, the types of arenas they fight in, and more. The tone's informative with some nice dry humor here and there, and the book's loaded with quotes from ancient source material about gladiators, including historians, politicians, and graffiti. There are images from sculptures, pottery and mosaics as well, and the book even includes a photo section showing a group of modern-day reenactors in full gladiatorial armor. Informative and entertaining!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

I left this book on a window ledge inside the renovated mill building, along the pathway leading to the restaurant. (The photo shows the river and railroad bridge nearby.) Hope the finder enjoys the book!
