Finished reading.

This is wasn’t an easy read and also a tough one to review. On the one hand, it’s definitely a story that lingers after you finish reading. There is a special atmosphere, which Ishiguro is amazing at capturing. The whole story sort of circles around the question whether it is better to remember ones past (both dark and happy), or to forget and only live in the present. To live at war because of one’s past or to live in peace . An interesting question and thus the concept of the book is a world where everyone forgets and lives in the present. So yes, the concept is amazing, the atmosphere is very special and I can certainly see why Ishiguro is considered a literaru genious and won the nobel prize.

But, on the other hand, sometimes this book was tedious. You sort of follow the pace of an old couple (Axl & Beatrice), who basically forget almost everything 5 minutes after it happens. The dialogues are very strange, they seem overly polite and unrealistic. I often had to re-read pages because it was hard to keep focus.

Yet overall this is a very interesting read and I would highly recommend it to everyone to give it a try :) despite some tedious parts, I do think this book was very fascinating and slightly addictive to read.

Unfortunately, I didn't warm to this never-ending seeking tale... I did manage to finish it but I asked myself many times if I was not missing anything throughout this book. It reminded me of The Lord of the Rings in its slow and boring quest, but I suppose there were a lot of underlying meanings and messages along the way.
Thanks for sharing anyway, Femke85! It will travel to Greece next week.

I was too late in starting reading the book, that now I don't have time to finish it. However, reaching Chapter 8, I enjoy the magic rythm, the allegories and the thought that this book provokes so much,, that I ordered another copy to keep reading and I will send it to mcsar today. I will write my full review as soon as I finish the book.
Sorry for the delay!

Just noticed that I have not made an entry after reading. I loved the book, its tone and its enchanting and mythical atmosphere. I loved the couple. It is hard to say more without spoilers. So I will just say that I highly recommend the book.

This was an interesting book to read. I have often been a fan of Kazuo Ishiguro, but for me, this book was definitely different than I first expected. I am not sure what conclusions are meant to be drawn from it, but it is definitely a worth wild read that I’ll consider over the next few weeks or days.

Are some memories better left forgotten? The question arises time and again throughout this book, yet respecting the gray nature of the query, there is no easy answer. This is a tale of profound love and loss, the moments and memories built and shared over lifetimes. Ishiguro weaves together history, legend, and fantasy, into a quietly devastating mystery that propelled me to keep reading.
