On a summer evening in 1933, Eleanor and Anthony Edevane's beautiful country home in Cornwall has been opened for a grand party, After fireworks bring the night to its finale, they discover that their 11 month old son, Theo, has disappeared from his crib. Despite an intensive police investigation, no trace is ever found of Theo, and in their devastation and despair, Anthony and Eleanor close up the house and move to London with their daughters Deborah, Alice and Clementine.

Seventy years later, Alice is still living in London and is a formidable writer of best-selling mystery novels. When she receives a letter out of the blue from a young police detective, Sadie Sparrow, asking questions about the unsolved case, Alice is drawn back into the past and to the truths locked away in the lake house.

An astonishing tale of secrets and suspicions, passionate love and bitter regret, The Lake House is a multi-layered novel.

This novel is a wonderful mixture of love, intrigue and mystery. So many times throughout the story I thought that I knew the answers to everything, only to discover a new twist. The story keeps the reader turning the pages to find out more, until the resolution at the end of the book. It is told in the present time and and in the past alternately which I found easy to follow. It is interesting to see how the characters evolved over time.
