This book came to me through a charity sale hosted by a local church (Preston Mennonite) in support of our community's food bank.

I was a fan of Barbara Smucker as a kid (not overly surprising since I have Mennonite heritage and grew up in Waterloo County), and while looking around the sale I found two copies of Amish Adventure. I wasn't sure which one I liked better, and I ended up bringing them both home. I knew that there was a blacked out inscription of some kind in this book, but it wasn't until I got it home and looked at it under different light that I saw that you can actually still make out the writing through the black marks, if the light is right. It looks like it says:

For the Preston Mennonite Church members, --
In Christian Fellowship.

It is then signed "Barbara C. Smucker" and dated "Oct. 1983"

Now, personally, I think it's sad that the church discarded a still very readable book that seems to have been inscribed to them by the author herself... but there is nothing I can do about that. Normally if I find that a book I bought intending to bookcross it has been signed by the author, I end up keeping it or otherwise finding it a new, permanent, home with someone who will appreciate it. In this case, however, the author's signature and inscription have been blacked out. Because of this, I doubt they will be of much value to anyone and I feel that bookcrossing this book is probably the best choice. At least it's an interesting glimpse at the book's past to add to this journal! :)

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

My husband and I are driving home from a quick trip to Philadelphia. We wanted to see some things in Lancaster County as well, as it's got an important family connection for me. My family emigrated from Lancaster County and founded our region of Ontario, Canada in the early 1800s; this was the first time I got to see where they came from (we even saw the house my sixth-great-grandparents built). I am actually of Mennonite heritage, not Amish, but since Amish Adventure is a book set in the "PA Dutch Country" that I come from, I thought it would be fun to leave it in the "PA Dutch Country" that my family came from so long ago. I left this book in the foyer of the Olive Garden where we stopped for supper before really getting on the road home.

If you've found this book, thanks for picking it up and checking out its journal! If you're new to bookcrossing, welcome. We'd love it if you'd stick around with us a while. I really hope that you enjoy both this book and the whole bookcrossing experience!

This book was released as part of the 2019 "52 Towns in 52 Weeks" Release Challenge. I finished my 52 a little while ago, but I've kept on counting... Lancaster was Town #57 for me!
