From the back of the book:
On October 1st 2001, Michael Chorost had his new ear booted up. He had become a cyborg.

Michael Chorost went completely deaf in his thirties and rather than live in silence he choose to have a computer surgically embedded in his skull, artificially restoring his hearing. This is the story of his journey, from silence to hearing, from human to cyborg, and how it transformed him.

Subtitled: "How Becoming Part Computer Made Me More Human".
