Thursday’s Child is a very honest and often intense first person account of the rape of 14 year old Victoria (Tori) by two men. It is 1961 and Tori lives with her parents, brothers and sisters in an old shack in the Australian bush.
Times are tough and the attitudes of the times even tougher. There are no options for Tori (and other girls such as her) when she realises she is pregnant. She is, of course, expected to give the baby up, but Tori has other ideas.
The author doesn’t spare the reader from what Tori is experiencing. We are very close to everything she goes through - beginning with the assault and then Tori’s gradually understanding of how her life has changed. The impact that the events have on the rest of the family are also very convincingly evoked. There is a ray of hope in the form of Tori’s teacher and a mysterious woman in Sydney. Highly recommended to young adult readers.
