7 out of 10

I found this softcover in this Little Free Library in Candia NH while dropping off some books of my own, and I was glad of another release copy. It's about a company that was a major presence in nearby Manchester for a very long time.

The book includes period maps and photographs of the millyard area, as well as many photos of the workers, and includes interviews and excerpts from letters and journals that convey quite a picture of life in the mills in their heyday. Culture clashes between various ethnic groups, union activism and the fallout from strikes, camaraderie and prejudice, celebrations and sadness... I enjoyed the descriptions of the different kinds of work - the finer points of industrial dyeing, for example. Intriguing look at that time and place!

[Side note: the SEE Science Center contains a fabulous scale model of the millyard - in Lego! It's well worth a visit. See more here.]
