A non-Tess Monaghan, although she and Crow make an appearance. Roberto 'Sandy' Sanchez is a retired police that still does cold case work. He investigates the death of an ex-stripper, turned respectable business woman, Julie Saxony, who once was the mistress of small time con Felix Brewer. Felix is married to the gorgeous on the outside, ugly on the inside Bambi. Felix is a jerk, but Bambi is equal to her husband. Pretentious, vain, egotistical, childish, petty, selfish; it's like her outward beauty had to have a counter balance. Felix, finally gets in trouble with the law, and instead of facing the music, which maybe would have been five to ten years, he flees, leaving Bambi, his three daughters, and his mistress Julie. Ten years to the day, Julie disappears, her body found many years later. A testament to how dislikable Bambi was, I couldn't muster any sympathy for the bad situation Felix left her in. I did feel for the daughters, well I guess the older ones, Michelle the youngest is Bambi Junior, as they didn't deserve the mess their scumbag father left them in.
Lots of twists and turns, to what is a family saga, disguised as a mystery. Sandy Sanchez is a compelling character. So compelling it looks like Lippman is going to keep him around even though this is a stand alone novel. You'll have to read it, to find out just how she plans to do that.
