Swarthout's dialogue is spectacular, the protagonist is a right-minded man of action, the writing is tight and extraordinary. J. B. Books is the shootist who turns El Paso upside down in 1901. He is a relic from a disappearing age and his arrival in town allows human nature and all manners of good and evil to pose and posture. This is the author's magnum opus.
