This is a strange book. I know the Marquis De Sade gave us the word sadist, so I was expecting a fair amount of brutality, but if this was meant to convince anybody that people can find happiness by doing as they please, no matter how brutal or depraved their actions are, it failed as far as I'm concerned. The lead character, after whom the book is named, seemed to singularly unlucky as she fell in with a serious of brutal and totally depraved men, who seemed to torture her - and other women - simply because they could with each new one being more extreme than the previous one. But none of them seemed to get any pleasure out of their actions; the book was unrelentingly bleak.
