Journal Entry 1 by wingSparkishwing from Fleckney, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Thursday, June 28, 2018
Chief Superintendent Michele Ferrara knows that the beautiful surface of his adopted city, Florence, hides dark undercurrents. When called in to investigate a series of brutal and apparently random murders, his intuition is confirmed.
Distrusted by his superiors and pilloried by the media, Ferrara finds time running out as the questions pile up. Is there a connection between the murders and the threatening letters he has received? Are his old enemies, the Calabrian Mafia, involved? And what part is played by a beautiful young woman facing a heart-rending decision, a priest troubled by a secret from his past, and an American journalist fascinated by the darker side of life?
Ferrara confronts the murky underbelly of Florence in an investigation that will put not only his career but also his life on the line.

And again, an author I have read and greatly enjoyed other books from, so I just had to pick this book out as well from the bookbox. One of the few I have not read from Michele Giuttari so especially welcome.

Well this has taken me much less time on tbr than expected but it was a treat after reading Christmas themed stories!!

I have read (and enjoyed) many from later in this series and it was about time I started at the beginning. To be honest I am not so sure I would have read the series if I had been introduced via this as it is rather less lustrous than the later fodder, however it was good to see how it all began and the introductions to Petra (though not Chiara) and other characters that I recognised from the later books. The low key but effective way in which this was written is rather intriguing from an English perspective and it is good to have such clear explanations of the Italian system. I can see how some of the characters grew over time.

The story of the murders itself is rather gently run through and despite the violence in the murders, the book as a whole did not seem grisly. As in his later books, Florence stars in many ways and is wrapped around the storyline well. I worked out well before the end who was committing these grisly murders but not the full reason why - which was only fully explained near the end (as you would expect). I would probably have tried a second book after reading this one but oddly, though I found it an easy enough read, I thought this was not as good as the series became later.

I think I have a plan for this.

I took this out of Plum Crazy's World of Crime bookbox, though I thought it looked familiar and yes, my bookcrossing history tells me I read in 2015 but I can't remember much. I will re-read it as we are going to Florence on our summer holidays so I'm sure it will get me in the mood for our Tuscan trip.

Well, holiday plans to Italy postponed till next year due to Covid19 so I re read this and enjoyed it again. I liked the setting of course and the characters were well drawn and real.
The abrupt ending in the forest was a bit of anti climax though

Thank you very much, kinedi, for the super box of books that arrived on my doorstep this morning. Very exciting!
I've recently brought home A Death in Tuscany by this author, and, although I haven't read it yet, this one looks equally appealling, thank you.
My sort of mystery!

Journal Entry 13 by wingNu-Kneeswing at Knaresborough, North Yorkshire United Kingdom on Saturday, August 29, 2020
A good strong story, albeit rather gruesome. It took me a while to get into it but it held my attention once it had grabbed it. I found it confusing at first as a host of characters with unfamiliar names were introduced in quick succession but they appeared more slowly after a while and I finally began to remember who was who . . .
Thanks again, kinedi!

Passed to me by my friend and neighbough Nu-Knees just as I was leaving for a week away and I started reading straight away.
This was a really compelling read. It was a bit brutal at times and the Italian names were initially confusing but a great read.
