The Forsaken (Vampire Huntress Legends)

The team is reeling from their last big war, and trying to reconnect, but are unaware that they are under another, more subtle attack. Their enemies are drawing them apart, creating and urging on rifts, causing fights, and pressing a new player into the game, one who might finally split Damali and Carlos permanently.
This book was very slow for me to get into, and I actually considered passing it on unread a few times, even taking my bookmark out and adding it the "to be registered" stack. However, something drew me to give it another go and after awhile it caught me up. Tonally, it is different from the other books, much more human- and relationship-focused rather than overt monster-battling. I think what really made me decide to read it was that it is one of the few paranormal romances I've read that really dig deep into a fractured relationship, with both parties having hurt the other, and it actually acknowledged cultural biases and unintended sexism escalating the problems between our two main characters. That is way more compelling to me than a magical quick-fix typical to the genre.
