Lewis Sullivan, an RE teacher at a secondary school, was approaching retirement when he wondered for the first time whether he ought to have chosen a more dramatic career. He lives in a village in the Midlands, less than a mile from the house in which he grew up. He always imagined living by the sea. His grown-up daughter visits every day, bringing soup. He does not want soup. He frequents his second-favourite pub, where he can get half a shandy, a speciality sausage and a bit of company ......

My first read by this author. She lives in a local village and I was delighted by her success with The Lighthouse, which I have yet to read. Now it is top of my tbr pile. A lovely understated though insightful presentation of characters. I wanted to live in her world forever.

A very gentle story which in this rather strange year had a welcoming calming effect on me.
The characters of Lewis and Sydney were exquisitely drawn. Quite a little gem of a novel

I loved this book! The characters evolved slowly, snippets of information that surprised, answering questions that arose in earlier chapters, steering the novel to an ending that was altogether unexpected…although on reflection there were clues in the text! Looking forward to reading The Lighthouse.
