I got this good-condition hardcover at a local Goodwill thrift shop, and was glad of another release copy. I'd read and enjoyed this book years ago (after I'd seen the wonderful 1980 film adaptation).

This is one of the rare cases where the film is as good, and even perhaps a touch better, than the book [although it's difficult to judge fairly when the film's performances are so strong]. Simply, it's an account of a family shattered by tragedy, focusing on the surviving son's struggles to climb out of his own guilt-induced depression. His parents, who have lost one son and almost lost the other, are trying to cope in their own ways - but the strain is revealing weak points in their relationships that might never have surfaced otherwise... It's painful and hopeful, both, and well worth reading [or watching!].

The TV Tropes page on the book and the film has some entertaining tidbits - but do beware of spoilers!
