Flora Dane, an innocent, animal loving, friendly college student was kidnapped, raped and held hostage for over a year. Then the almost impossible happens; Flora Dane is rescued and survives. Happy ending? Perhaps, the former carefree girl, is extremely cautious, to the point of paranoia, but who could blame her. She also starts to take a rather unhealthy interest in the disappearances of other young women, and despite her own fears, tries to investigate, setting herself up as bait. The bait is taken and I shan't say anything else.
Not sure I was taken by the plotting of this novel, however Gardner's description of Dane's psychological state was compelling. She is strong on character, and not as much on story.
