At first glance this book will probably be passed over. The apparently dry subject material - the story of a confidence man in mid-19th century Russia - together with its rather ragged state will likely not attract too many takers. However it is certainly worth the effort; the humour has a strikingly modern tone ... especially the dialogue (which I think owes a lot also to the translation) and the reader will likely find that it strikes many chords with everyday life. Postscript: if it seems to end rather abruptly, that is because Gogol apparently had a lot more planned for it; but the execution of it apparently drove him around the bend. Also note: for a more sophisticated review, please see this one by A.S.Byatt in the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2004/oct/30/classics.asbyatt
