An incredible read.

From the back cover:

"When he falls ill on his way home from school, fifteen-year-old Michael Berg is rescued by Hanna, a woman twice his age. In time she becomes his lover. She enthralls him with her passion, but puzzles him with her odd silences. Then she inexplicably disappears.

When Michael next sees her, he is a young law student and Hanna is on trial for a hideous crime. . ."

This is an excellent book with great descriptions and I really enjoyed it. While it begins as a rites of passage novel, it takes very interesting turns into the behaviour of seemingly ordinary people and what motivates them.
PM on it's way to gwendy for her address.

upon starting the book i didn't realize what it was really about. wasn't my cup of tea. the writing was decent, it just didn't really get through to me. the narrator talks about a numbness he feels, and that's sort of how the whole thing came across to me.

I can't quite decide exactly what it was about this book that I enjoyed, but I did enjoy it. Perhaps it is the insight into the very personal feelings of people and what motivates them to do certain things. At times the book seems to drag, but then it gets interesting again. Thanks for sharing this! It's going out in the mail to the next one on the list in the morning.

Just an update and a reminder....I would love to have some information on where this book is at now so that I can either open the bookring to new members (or just receive it back again) or declare it stalled! This was the first ring I started and I would appreciate an email or a journal entry to know where it is at. Thanks!

AceofHearts found this on my wish list and offered it to me.... am thrilled that it has arrived. I'll place it fairly close to the top of my TBR pile; a few to get to first that others are waiting for. So Vibrant-Art, what travels it has had!! Do you want it back, or shall I search for a new RABCK when I finish?

8 out of 10

I read this book in one day over the holiday break. It is a very intriguing set up and very realistic, both in the teenage fascination with an older woman and the affair that develops, and then as the exploration of a life gone awry in Nazi Germany, where otherwise plain people could let themselves be drawn into horrors without really confronting their own behavior. On a different level, of course, it is about the power of being literate and the huge handicap of being illiterate and how that might push someone into a life they might have avoided otherwise. Hannah's biggest worry is being discovered at her weakest. But that is quite simple for such a complex life, and book. I have yet to see the movie but feel sure I will find it scary and sad, too. This is a book one reads for literary enjoyment but not for a story line. One could spend a long time discussing it. I am sending it now as an RABCK to Australia where I hope it will find a lot of readers who like it.
