Jules, our protagonist, is a spectacularly fit 75 year old cellist. This is the author's paean to Paris, the city he loves, the city of lovers. Helprin seems to be fascinated with old men being attractive to and attracted by young women. Plot centers on the new rise and ongoing prevalence of anti-semitism in France and the redemptive power of music.
