(different edition, paperback, different cover picture)

The first book of many in Jason Bourne series.
Which is what Ludlum is most famous for... I like the series, and of course it makes most sense to be enjoyed in order so start from this one.
But all the other books of Ludlum are lovely too - some of my favorites include The Sigma Protocol and The Parsifal Mosaic.

"Who is Jason Bourne? Is he an assassin, a terrorist, a thief? Why has he got four million dollars in a Swiss bank account? Why has someone tried to murder him?...

Jason Bourne does not know the answer to any of these questions. Suffering from amnesia, he does not even know that he is Jason Bourne. What manner of man is he? What are his secrets? Who has he killed?"

"Don't ever apologize to an author for buying something in paperback, or taking it out from a library (that's what they're there for. Use your library). Don't apologize to this author for buying books second hand, or getting them from bookcrossing or borrowing a friend's copy. What's important to me is that people read the books and enjoy them, and that, at some point in there, the book was bought by someone. And that people who like things, tell other people. The most important thing is that people read... "
