This book starts its BookCrossing journey from Delphi, Greece
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Here is Oscar Wilde's most brilliant tour de force, a witty and buoyant comedy of manners that has delighted millions in countless productions since its first performance in London's St. James' Theatre on February 14, 1895.
The Importance of Being Earnest is celebrated not only for the lighthearted ingenuity of its plot, but for its inspired dialogue, rich with scintillating epigrams still savored by all who enjoy artful conversation.
From the play's effervescent beginnings in Algernon Moncrieff's London flat to its hilarious denouement in the drawing room of Jack Worthing's country manor in Hertfordshire, this comic masterpiece keeps audiences breathlessly anticipating a new bon mot or a fresh twist of plot moment to moment. "
What a character Oscar Wilde was! There is a reason his novellas get read again and again and his theater plays are performed all over the world ages after they were written!
This clever, fast paced play, full of wit, irony and the author's famous puns is a quick read and always a pleasure to read!
All Wilde's works have a permanent place on my book shelves and I bought this little book for BookCrossing purposes, but of course I couldn't resist a re-read of this farse-ose play before sending it off to trot the globe.
I hope future readers will enjoy it as much as I did!
I've never read any of Wilde's books so this might be a timely introduction. Thank you for sending all the way to Australia.
I didn't think that I would be reading this book so soon but I did because I was "in between" books and this one was thin I thought I could finish it quickly.
When I had a quick peek I was a little disheartened to see that it was a play. It's a genre (not sure if that's the right word) that I am not keen on. It's up there with J K Rowling's Harry Potter and the Cursed Child or Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet or Homer's Odyssey - books that I would really like to read but have never done so because I get lost in the writing style.
Anyway, I had a go and...
I love it! It's simple and yet very entertaining. It was funny and refreshing. I could almost picture the characters and their facial expressions.
Thank you Delphi-Reader for introducing me to Oscar Wilde.
I've wanted to read this ever since I saw the movie version of it (really DO recommend it to you book-a-neer!) with Colin Firth, Rupert Everett and Judi Dench - you have to see it, seeing it performed reveals Oscar Wilde's genius at work. Plays HAVE to be watched to truly love their brilliance. Looking forward to reading the book version though, so thanks for passing it on and I can't wait to pass it on to the next person after that. AND after I've done that, I'm looking forward to one day getting to read the biography 'The Importance of Being Ernest' by Ernest Cline...so much earnestness, bliss!
